For over 50 years,
Powdermill Nature Reserve, the 2,200-acre biological research station
of Carnegie Museum of Natural History, has been dedicated
to its mission of Research, Education, and Preservation. Located in
Western
Pennsylvania, PNR offers a variety of pristine habitats where
researchers
and educators focus on ecological processes. In addition to being home
to one of the longest continually running avian research stations in
the
United States, scientists study local native plant and animal species.
Visitors of all ages come to gain a greater knowledge about the natural
world through innovative and exciting educational programs and exhibits.
It is a place of great beauty that has enjoyed the support and following
of thousands of devoted nature lovers, educators, and scientists just
as it has inspired artists who hav e
experienced its serenity.
Each year for the past 10 years, Powdermill volunteers have orchestrated
a remarkably successful event built around talented people who have created
wonderful, original birdhouses and garden items that are donated to be
auctioned at Powdermill's annual benefit, Garden Themes & Birdhouse
Dreams. This great event grows larger and more successful with each passing
year. The 2007 benefit raised over $100,000, which included a live auction
of exciting items and fabulous opportunites and a separate silent auction
of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted birdhouses and garden-related creations.
Over the years, more
than 200 people have submitted nearly 800 entries judged by community
leaders. Always a sell out, with attendance over
400, scores of exquisitely conceived birdhouses have found new homes
with all proceeds fully benefiting the important mission of Powdermill.
What a wonderful outcome for everyone involved.
